How to Achieve More of Your Goals

If you always make goals at the start of every year but you never seem able to stick to them for very long, it can hugely frustrating. And if these goals relate to lifestyle changes, it can even affect your health and wellbeing. Here are some tips for setting goals and achieving them more often.

Defining Your Goals

It’s often the case that people know what they don’t want from life but are less sure of what they really do want. Spend some time thinking about what it is that you want to change in your life and the reasons behind this. It can help to create sensory results that relate to your goal, such as how you’ll feel when you achieve it and more specifically, what you’ll expect to see and tell yourself at that point.

These images can be held in your mind as part of your motivation while you’re working towards your goal.

Setting goals is the easy part though; reaching them is the much harder part!

Get Committed

For most goals, you’re going to need a lot of strong commitment to stay on track with what you’re trying to achieve. This is what will get you through when things start to get a bit tough.

Start Off Gradually

If you set yourself unrealistic goals, there’s a much bigger chance that it will be too difficult to achieve.

Smaller scale goals that are much more achievable can make you feel a lot more positive about your chances of success.

Breaking down your goals into manageable, “bite size” chunks helps with this. As you tick each mini goal off, you’re that little bit closer to the ultimate goal.

On a similar note, stick to one goal at a time and wait until you’ve achieved that before you start bringing others into the equation. People often make the mistake of trying to reach too many goals at once and it can be disheartening when you don’t get there.

Be Prepared for Sacrifices and Compromises

Most goals are going to take a bit of sacrifice on your part to make them happen. Sometimes, these will be short term goals but they may also be longer term sacrifices needed too. It can include things you need to stop doing (such as not smoking or a bad habit).

Making these changes isn’t always just a matter of willpower; sometimes it will mean that you have to retrain the way that your mind has been working until now.

Weight loss is a common example of this as it often requires you to change your relationship with food and this can be difficult to do by yourself, even if you have the necessary willpower and motivation. I see a lot of clients who have tried to lose weight by themselves but haven’t found any lasting success and this is largely down to the fact that their relationship with food is still the same, no matter what diet they try. Once we start working together and are able to change that, they’re often amazed at their ability to keep the weight off.

Instead of thinking of it in terms of what you’ll be giving up, switch your focus to what you’ll gain afterwards. This might be emotional or physical but either way, it should be a good incentive!

Think Positive

Positive thinking can help a lot when it comes to achieving your goals. You may not realise it but negative thought patterns can be self sabotage when it comes to reaching your goals.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help You to Achieve Your Goals

To see how hypnotherapy can support you with goal achievement, it helps to understand some of the key factors that can be involved in failing to meet your goals.

Although you may not realise it, low self esteem is often linked to goal achievement (or lack of it).

Your thoughts are often reflected in your behaviour so it isn’t too surprising that feeling negatively about yourself is more likely to have an impact on how likely it is that you’ll achieve your goals.

A negative perception of yourself can also mean that you have a negative view of the future and what it will hold. This can also place an invisible ceiling on what you feel you can achieve.

By changing your self perception, hypnotherapy can have an indirect effect on achieving your goals. Accessing your unconscious mind means that your view of yourself can change. Negative perceptions can be swapped for healthier and more positive versions that can help you to achieve your goals.

Hypnotherapy can also help with positive thinking. Again, this is linked to your unconscious mind. Negative thought patterns can be replaced with more positive alternatives.
